In treating somebody with gum disease, one of the things we want to do is make sure that person is comfortable. We would always use anesthetic, if necessary, to be able to numb that area that we're working on. To take that even further, if someone's anxious about having that done, there's always options of sedation and ways to help that person relax. We tend to do this in a non-surgical way and treat things early enough before we have to get to a surgical intervention.
That’s a real double whammy! And it’s why we screen for gum disease during every dental exam in our Jackson, MI dentist office.
If we find it, we can treat it with a deep cleaning treatment. And we’ll suggest products that help reverse some of its harmful effects.
If you’ve got tender, red gums, you may have gum disease. Call Dr. Scott Watterson of Watterson Family Dentistry at 517-888-0021 for a screening.
Catching Gum Disease in Its Early Stages
Gum disease starts with a buildup of bacteria-filled plaque that causes your gums to become tender and inflamed. For the best outcome, we want to treat gum disease while it’s in this early stage, called gingivitis.
If plaque isn’t removed, your gums can pull away from your teeth and create “pockets” where more bacteria collects and causes infection. Your body tries to fight the infection, which causes the connective tissue that keeps your teeth in place to break down. This later stage of gum disease is called periodontitis.
Using a deep cleaning method called scaling and root planing, Dr. Scott Watterson will remove plaque and bacteria from the gum tissue surrounding your tooth roots. We’ll also provide products like MI Paste to help restore damaged tooth surfaces and prevent plaque buildup.
