So, sleep apnea is becoming a hot topic in the health profession. I think the public is becoming more and more aware of it, as well as celebrities start to talk about it. Sleep apnea is one those things where people often associate with snoring, which that definitely can be a part of it, but when you're stopping the process of breathing at night, it's not a good thing. And so, one thing that we focus on and one thing that we are in tune with is the impact of sleep apnea and how we, as dentists, can help with that.
So, there are different oral appliances that we can use to help position your jaw to open your airway at night so that as you're sleeping, you're still having an open airway, which is critical. Oftentimes, we find that a spouse, typically wife, makes their husband come in and get treatment for this because they're such a bad snorer or the wife is waking up or the spouse is waking up because of their husband gasping for air in the middle of the night and scaring them, waking them up.
So, treating sleep apnea is a very critical thing: it impacts your entire body and the different organ systems and there are ways that we can do that. One of the neat things that we can use with our 3D imaging equipment is starting to look at the airway. It's not when you're sleeping but if we can identify that your airway is constricted while you're standing up, chances are it's constricted when you're sleeping and laying down.
So a first step in the process, if you haven't already, would be to have a sleep study done and that would be ordered by your primary care physician. And then, depending on your diagnosis, we can talk then further about different treatment options that may be available.
If your chronic snoring is a sign of sleep apnea, we can create a customized oral appliance for you in our Jackson, MI dentist office that will help you – and your family members – get a good night’s rest every night.

An Oral Appliance Can Help You Rest
The two most common treatments for sleep apnea and chronic snoring are:
- CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, which keeps your airway open with a steady stream of air
- Oral appliance, which gently shifts your jaw into place to keep your airway open
Many of our patients find oral appliances more comfortable and less distracting to wear than a CPAP. Dr. Scott Watterson has special training and years of hands-on experience treating sleep apnea, so he can help you determine which treatment is right for you.
We Can Help Diagnose Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition in which soft tissue in your throat blocks your airway, causing you to gasp for breath – as many as hundreds of times in one night. While that’s alarming enough, sleep apnea has also been linked to health conditions such as stroke and diabetes.
Using our high-tech Galileos 3D imaging system, we can look for obstructions and other issues in your airway. We’ll also look at your medical history and talk to you about your symptoms. And we can work with your physician on obtaining a sleep study that will show whether or not you have sleep apnea.
